1. How do you calculate Asphalt Tonnage?
Unlike concrete which is primarily ordered by cubic volume, asphalt is manufactured, sold, and delivered by weight (tons). The calculation requires three steps:
- Step 1: Find the Surface Area (Length × Width).
- Step 2: Find the Volume (Area × Thickness).
- Step 3: Multiply the Volume by the Density of the asphalt to get the final weight.
2. What is the standard density of Asphalt?
Standard Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) weighs approximately 145 lbs per cubic foot (or ~2322 kg per cubic meter). In industry shorthand in the US, this is often calculated using a conversion factor where 1 cubic yard of solid asphalt equals approximately 2.05 tons. Cold patch or recycled mixes may vary slightly, generally weighing around 135 lbs per cubic foot.
3. Why do I need a Compaction/Waste Margin?
When asphalt is poured from the truck, it is loose and full of air. A heavy roller must compact it to its final structural density. Because of this compression—along with material sticking to the truck bed, slight over-excavation of the sub-base, and messy edges—you must order more loose asphalt than your final math dictates. A 5% to 10% margin is standard to ensure you don't run short.
4. Do I need a Gravel Sub-base?
Yes. Asphalt is flexible; its strength comes entirely from the foundation underneath it. A typical residential driveway requires 4 to 8 inches of crushed gravel base compacted tightly before the asphalt is poured. Without a proper sub-base, the asphalt will quickly crack and pothole under the weight of vehicles.
5. Tons vs Metric Tonnes
If you are using the Imperial system (US), the calculator outputs Short Tons (2,000 lbs). If you are using the Metric system, the calculator outputs Metric Tonnes (1,000 kg). Ensure you clarify this with your supplier, though most local suppliers automatically operate in their region's standard unit.
