Now comes the question that trips up almost everyone—
How many bags should you actually buy?

Let's break it down.
Why Bag Estimation Starts With Volume
Mulch, soil, and concrete don't just cover a surface—they fill a three-dimensional space.
That's why measuring only the length and width using a Square Footage Calculator isn't enough.
You also need the depth.
Think about a garden bed.
Two beds may both measure 10 × 8 feet, but one needs a 2-inch mulch layer while the other needs 5 inches.
Same area.
Completely different amount of material.
The depth determines how much space must be filled—and that's what decides the number of bags.
The Basic Formula
Every bag calculator works from one simple equation.

- The first is the total amount of space your project needs.
- The second is the amount of material inside one bag.
If your project requires 40 cubic feet and each bag contains 2 cubic feet—
40 ÷ 2 = 20 bags
The logic is exactly the same as filling buckets with water.
If one bucket holds 2 litres and you need 20 litres, you'll need 10 buckets.

Step 1 — Measure the Project
For most projects you'll need:
- Length
- Width
- Depth
Formula:
Example:
- Length = 12 ft
- Width = 8 ft
- Depth = 3 inches
Before calculating—
Convert the depth.
3 inches = 0.25 ft
Now calculate:
12 × 8 × 0.25 = 24 cubic feet
Your project requires 24 cubic feet of material.
Step 2 — Know the Bag Size
Every product lists the amount of material inside the bag.
Common examples include:
Mulch
- 1 cubic foot
- 1.5 cubic feet
- 2 cubic feet
- 3 cubic feet
Garden Soil
- 0.75 cubic feet
- 1 cubic foot
- 1.5 cubic feet
- 2 cubic feet
Concrete Mix
Manufacturers usually specify the yield, such as:
- 0.45 cubic feet
- 0.60 cubic feet
- 0.75 cubic feet
Always calculate using the yield, not the bag's weight.
A heavier bag doesn't automatically produce more concrete—it depends on the mix design.
Step 3 — Divide by the Bag Yield
Suppose your garden requires:
24 cubic feet
You're buying:
2 cubic foot mulch bags
Calculation:
24 ÷ 2 = 12 bags
That's the minimum requirement.
Most people purchase one extra bag for touch-ups later.
Mulch Example
Suppose you're covering a flower bed.
Measurements:
- Length = 18 ft
- Width = 6 ft
- Depth = 3 inches
Step 1
Convert depth.
3 inches = 0.25 ft
Step 2
Find the volume.
18 × 6 × 0.25 = 27 cubic feet
Step 3
Using 2 cubic foot bags:
27 ÷ 2 = 13.5 bags
Round up.
You'll need 14 bags.
Why It Works
Mulch forms a protective layer across the surface.
The thicker that layer becomes, the more cubic volume is needed—even though the garden area never changes.
That's why increasing mulch depth from 2 inches to 4 inches almost doubles the material required.
Soil Example
Imagine you're filling a raised garden bed.
Dimensions:
- Length = 8 ft
- Width = 4 ft
- Depth = 10 inches
Convert the depth.
10 inches = 0.83 ft
Volume:
8 × 4 × 0.83 = 26.56 cubic feet
Using 1.5 cubic foot soil bags:
26.56 ÷ 1.5 = 17.7 bags
Round up.
Purchase 18 bags.
Remember that loose soil settles after watering. If you're filling raised beds to the top, keeping one or two extra bags nearby can save another trip later.
Concrete Example
Suppose you're pouring a walkway.
Dimensions:
- Length = 15 ft
- Width = 4 ft
- Thickness = 4 inches
Convert thickness.
4 inches = 0.333 ft
Calculate the volume.
15 × 4 × 0.333 = 19.98 cubic feet
If each concrete bag yields:
0.60 cubic feet
Calculation:
19.98 ÷ 0.60 = 33.3 bags
Round up.
You'll need 34 bags.

Concrete fills the entire thickness of the slab—not just the surface.
Even a small increase in slab thickness adds significant volume because every square foot of the project becomes deeper.
Why You Should Always Round Up
Never round down when buying bagged materials.
If the calculation gives:
13.2 bags
Buy:
14 bags
You can't purchase 0.2 of a bag, and running short usually costs more than buying one extra.
For concrete, running out during a pour can create cold joints that weaken the finished slab.
For mulch or soil, shortages often leave uneven coverage that's difficult to blend later.
Don't Forget Waste & Settlement
Real projects aren't perfect.
Some material is always lost through:
- Spillage
- Torn bags
- Uneven ground
- Compaction
- Settlement after watering
- Wind during mulch spreading
- Concrete left in the mixer or wheelbarrow

Calculate each section separately.
Then add the volumes together before dividing by the bag size.
This approach is much more accurate than guessing the overall dimensions.
Bag Size vs Bulk Material
For larger projects, buying individual bags may not be the most economical option.
As a general rule:
- Small DIY jobs → Bagged materials are convenient, easier to transport, and create less waste.
- Large landscaping or concrete projects → Bulk delivery by cubic yard, cubic metre, or truckload often reduces the cost per unit.
