A staircase calculation requires finding the "Run" of a single step. You measure the depth of the Tread (where you step) and add it to the height of the Riser (the vertical backing). You multiply this total run by the width of the staircase, and then multiply by the total number of stairs to find the total area.
5. What about padding or underlayment?
Carpet padding is strictly sold in the exact same measurement units (Square Yards or Square Meters) as the carpet itself. Whatever area you calculate for the carpet will be the exact same area you need to order for your padding.
6. Can I use this for other flooring types?
While the square footage math is identical, materials like hardwood, laminate, or tile are typically sold directly by the Square Foot (or Square Meter) and usually require a lower waste margin (5-7%) depending on the layout.
