This depends entirely on your desired R-Value (depth). If the manufacturer specifies that one bag covers 40 sq ft at R-30, you divide 1,000 by 40, resulting in 25 bags. Adding a 10% waste margin (for uneven blowing and settling), you should order roughly 28 bags.

What does R-Value mean?

R-Value is a measure of thermal resistance—how well a material resists the conductive flow of heat. A higher R-Value means better insulation. Walls typically require R-13 to R-21, while attics require much higher resistance, typically R-30 to R-60 depending on your climate zone.

Can I compress thick insulation to fit into a thin wall?

No. Compressing fiberglass insulation actually reduces its R-Value. The insulating property comes from the tiny air pockets trapped within the fibers. If you compress it, you squeeze out the air, rendering it less effective. Always buy insulation designed for your specific stud cavity depth (e.g., 3.5 inches for a 2x4 wall).
