1. How do you calculate the amount of insulation needed?
Calculating your insulation needs requires determining the total square footage (or square meterage) of the surface you wish to insulate. Depending on your project scope, this means:
- Walls: Multiply the length of the wall by the height.
- Full Room: Find the perimeter of the room (add all wall lengths together) and multiply by the ceiling height.
- Attics/Floors: Multiply the length by the width of the floor or ceiling plane.
2. Deducting Doors and Windows
You shouldn't buy insulation for empty spaces. As an industry rule of thumb, we automatically subtract 21 square feet (approx 1.95 m²) for every standard door, and 12 square feet (approx 1.11 m²) for every standard window. This prevents massive over-ordering while ensuring your estimate is structurally accurate.
3. Batts, Rolls, and Bags: What's the difference?
Insulation comes in several forms:
- Batts: Pre-cut rectangular pieces of fiberglass or mineral wool designed to fit snugly between standard wall studs (e.g., 16" or 24" on center).
- Rolls: Continuous lengths of insulation that you roll out and cut to size yourself. Excellent for attics and long, uninterrupted wall cavities.
- Blown-in (Bags): Loose-fill cellulose or fiberglass that requires a blowing machine. It provides excellent coverage for oddly shaped attics and existing wall cavities.
4. How to read Package Coverage
Every insulation package clearly states its coverage area on the label. This number dictates how many square feet (or meters) a single package will cover at a specific R-Value.
For example, a common bag of blown-in cellulose might cover 40 sq. ft. at an R-30 depth, but only 25 sq. ft. if you blow it thicker to achieve R-49. Always input the coverage number that corresponds to your target R-value depth.
5. Why add a Waste Margin?
Trimming batts to fit around electrical boxes, plumbing, and non-standard stud bays produces scrap material that cannot be reused. A 10% waste margin is universally recommended for standard rooms. If you are insulating a complex roofline or an older home with irregular framing, consider bumping this to 15%.
