1. Understanding Structural Loads
Before designing beams, joists, or foundations, engineers must calculate the total forces acting on a structure. These forces are categorized primarily into Live Loads and Dead Loads.
- Live Loads: Temporary, movable forces. This includes people, furniture, vehicles, wind, and snow. A residential floor is typically engineered for 40 PSF (Pounds per Square Foot), while an office might require 50 PSF or higher.
- Dead Loads: Permanent, stationary forces. This is the weight of the structure itself—framing, drywall, roofing materials, and fixed equipment. A standard wood-framed floor usually exerts about 10 to 15 PSF of dead load.
2. What is LRFD (Factored Load)?
Modern structural engineering often uses Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD). Because dead loads (the materials) are predictable, but live loads (people, snow) are highly unpredictable, safety factors are applied.
The standard ASCE/IBC formula for ultimate load combinations is:
Factored Load = 1.2 × (Dead Load) + 1.6 × (Live Load)
This means we increase the dead load by 20% and the live load by 60% to ensure the structure has a massive safety margin against catastrophic failure.
3. Using this Calculator

- Step 1: Input the geometric dimensions of the area (e.g., a 12x12 bedroom).
- Step 2: Select or input the Live Load (e.g., 40 psf) and Dead Load (e.g., 10 psf).
- Step 3: The calculator multiplies the Area by the loads to give you the total unfactored pounds (or kg) the room supports, and then applies the LRFD multipliers to give you the Ultimate Factored Load.
4. Metric vs. Imperial Equivalents
In the US, loads are measured in PSF (Pounds per Square Foot). In metric regions, loads are typically measured in kg/m² (kilograms per square meter) or kPa (kilonewtons per square meter).
Conversion rule of thumb: 1 PSF is approximately equal to 4.88 kg/m².
