1. How do you calculate Rebar needed for a slab?
Calculating the amount of reinforcing bar (rebar) requires plotting a grid over the surface area of your concrete slab, minus the edge clearance. The steps are:
- Step 1: Find the effective width and length of the slab by subtracting the Edge Clearance (Cover) from all sides.
- Step 2: Divide the effective width by the grid spacing to find the number of bars running lengthwise. Multiply that count by the effective length.
- Step 3: Divide the effective length by the grid spacing to find the number of bars running widthwise. Multiply that count by the effective width.
- Step 4: Add both totals together to get the raw linear length of rebar needed.
2. Lapping and Waste Margins
Rebar is typically sold in standard lengths (20 feet in the US, 6 meters in metric regions). If your slab is wider than a single bar, you must overlap (lap) two bars and tie them together to maintain structural integrity. A standard lap splice is usually 40 to 50 times the diameter of the bar. To make budgeting easy, an overall 10% to 15% Lapping & Waste Margin is added to the total linear length.
3. Rebar Sizes and Weights
Rebar is heavy, and knowing the total weight is critical for transport and purchasing. In the US, rebar sizes represent the diameter in eighths of an inch. In metric regions, it represents the exact diameter in millimeters.

4. Metric Rebar Standards
