1. How do you calculate sand in cubic yards?
Calculating the amount of sand needed for a landscaping, masonry, or sandbox project requires finding the 3D volume. To find the volume in cubic yards:
- Step 1: Find the Surface Area (Length in feet × Width in feet).
- Step 2: Convert your desired depth from inches to feet (e.g., 2 inches ÷ 12 = 0.166 feet).
- Step 3: Multiply the Area by the Depth to get Cubic Feet.
- Step 4: Divide the Cubic Feet by 27 to get Cubic Yards (since 3' x 3' x 3' = 27 ft³).
2. Bags vs. Bulk Delivery
Depending on the size of your project, you will either buy individual bags or order a bulk delivery.
- Standard Bags: Play sand and masonry sand are commonly sold in 50 lb bags, which generally yield about 0.5 cubic feet each. You would need about 54 of these bags to equal 1 cubic yard.
- Bulk Delivery: Sold by the "scoop" or cubic yard/ton. Bulk is significantly cheaper for large projects like leveling a pool base or large paver installations. Use the calculator to compare the cost of buying bags vs ordering bulk.
3. How deep should the sand be?
- Sandboxes: A depth of 6 to 8 inches is recommended for children to have enough depth to dig and build.
- Paver Base: A leveling bed of sand under pavers is typically 1 to 2 inches thick (over a gravel base).
- Above Ground Pools: A leveling base of sand is typically 2 inches thick over leveled ground.
4. Estimating Weight
Sand is heavy, and its weight varies significantly based on moisture content. Dry play sand weighs about 100 lbs per cubic foot (~1.35 tons per yard). Wet sand can weigh 125 lbs per cubic foot (~1.7 tons per yard). Overloading a personal vehicle can be dangerous.
