1. What is a VAT Calculator?

A VAT (Value Added Tax) calculator is a fundamental financial tool used to calculate the exact tax amount levied on goods and services. It helps business owners, accountants, and consumers seamlessly toggle between Net Prices (the cost before tax) and Gross Prices (the total cost including tax).

2. How to Add VAT (Net to Gross)

If you are a retailer or service provider who needs to generate an invoice, you will typically start with a base "Net Price" and need to add your country's standard VAT percentage to determine what the customer actually pays.

3. How to Extract VAT (Gross to Net)

This is commonly referred to as "Reverse Calculating VAT." If you have a receipt for a business expense that only shows the final total paid, and you need to deduct the tax to claim business expenses, you must reverse the math. You cannot simply subtract the VAT percentage from the total—that will yield an incorrect number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VAT?

VAT stands for Value Added Tax. It is a consumption tax placed on a product whenever value is added at each stage of the supply chain, from production to the point of sale. It is the most common tax system used globally.

What is the difference between Net Price and Gross Price?

The Net Price is the raw, baseline cost of the good or service before any taxes are applied. The Gross Price is the final total amount the consumer actually pays out of pocket, which includes the VAT.

How do I calculate VAT manually?

To find the VAT amount to add, convert the percentage to a decimal (e.g., 20% = 0.20) and multiply it by your net price. If your net price is $100, 100 × 0.20 = 20. Your VAT is $20.

Why can't I just subtract the VAT percentage from the Gross Price?

This is the most common accounting error. If an item costs $120 gross (with a 20% VAT), subtracting 20% from $120 gives you $96. But the real net price is $100. You must use the reverse formula: Gross / 1.20 = Net.

Is VAT the same thing as Sales Tax?

No. While both are consumption taxes, a standard Sales Tax (used primarily in the USA) is only collected once at the final point of sale to the consumer. VAT is collected incrementally along the entire supply chain.

What is GST?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. In terms of mathematical calculation, GST and VAT are virtually identical systems. You can confidently use this calculator to solve standard GST rates in countries like Canada, Australia, and India.
