Materials Included in a Deck Takeoff
A deck is much more than the surface you walk on.
Every structural component has a specific job.
1. Deck Boards
These form the finished walking surface.
The calculator estimates how many boards are required based on:
- Deck length
- Deck width
- Board width
- Spacing between boards
- Board length
Board spacing matters because timber expands and contracts with moisture. Small gaps allow water to drain away and improve airflow underneath the decking.
2. Joists
Joists support the decking boards.
Think of them as the skeleton beneath the deck. They distribute the weight of people, furniture, grills, and planters across the entire structure instead of allowing individual boards to carry the load.
Typical spacing:
- 300 mm (12 inches)
- 400 mm (16 inches)
- 450 mm (18 inches)
- 600 mm (24 inches)
Closer spacing creates a stiffer deck with less bounce.
3. Beams
Beams support the joists.
Instead of every joist transferring its load directly to the ground, beams collect those loads and pass them to the support posts.
Larger decks often require multiple beams.
4. Posts & Footings
Posts transfer the deck's weight into the foundation.

5. Fasteners
Every board needs fixing.

How the Deck Calculator Works
The estimator follows a logical sequence.
Step 1 — Calculate Deck Area

Example:
- Deck length = 6 m
- Deck width = 4 m
6 × 4 = 24 m²
This tells the calculator how much surface needs to be covered.
Step 2 — Estimate Deck Boards
The calculator determines how many boards fit across the deck.
It considers both the board width and the expansion gap.
Suppose your decking board is:
- Width = 140 mm
- Gap = 5 mm
Effective coverage becomes:
140 + 5 = 145 mm

Step 3 — Calculate Joists
Joists run perpendicular to the decking boards.
The calculator divides the deck width by the chosen joist spacing.
Example:
- Deck width = 4,000 mm
- Joist spacing = 400 mm
4,000 ÷ 400 = 10 spaces
Since framing starts and ends with a joist, you'll typically need one additional joist.
Final estimate:
This layout keeps the deck properly supported and reduces movement under load.
Step 4 — Estimate Fasteners
Fastener quantity depends on:
- Number of boards
- Number of joists
- Fasteners used at every board-to-joist intersection
For example, if every crossing requires two screws, the total screw count increases surprisingly fast.

The direction you lay decking boards affects more than appearance.
