What Materials Does It Estimate?
Most paver installations require several layers—not just the pavers themselves.
1. Pavers
These create the finished surface.
Calculate how many individual pavers are required based on the project area and the dimensions of each paver.
2. Bedding Sand
This thin layer sits directly under the pavers.
Its job isn't simply to "hold" the pavers—it creates a perfectly level surface, fills tiny gaps under each stone, and helps distribute loads evenly. Without a consistent sand layer, pavers can rock, settle unevenly, or develop low spots over time.
Typical thickness:
- 25–40 mm (1–1.5 inches)
3. Base Material
This is usually crushed stone, road base, or gravel.
The base carries the actual weight of people, furniture, or vehicles. Instead of the load pushing directly into the soil, the compacted aggregate spreads the force over a much larger area.
That's why the base is always much thicker than the sand layer.
Typical depths:

The heavier the expected load, the deeper the base should be.
How to Calculate Paver & Base Materials
Material estimation follows a simple step-by-step sequence.
Step 1 — Calculate Area

Example:
- Length = 8 m
- Width = 4 m
8 × 4 = 32 m²
Everything else starts from this value.
Step 2 — Calculate Number of Pavers
Divide the total project area by the surface area of a single paver.
Suppose each paver measures:
- 200 mm × 100 mm
Converted to metres:
0.2 × 0.1 = 0.02 m²
Calculation:
32 ÷ 0.02 = 1,600 pavers
This is the theoretical minimum.
Real projects always require extra pieces.
Step 3 — Add Waste Allowance

Typical waste guidelines:
- Straight layouts: 5%
- Mixed patterns: 8%
- Circular designs: 10–15%
- Complex patios with many cuts: Up to 20%
For the previous example (adding 10% waste):
1,600 × 1.10 = 1,760 pavers
Ordering slightly more is much cheaper than running short after the supplier sells out of that colour batch.
Step 4 — Calculate Bedding Sand Volume

Example:
- Area = 32 m²
- Sand depth = 30 mm (0.03 m)
32 × 0.03 = 0.96 m³

Step 5 — Calculate Base Material Volume
The exact same volume formula applies to crushed stone.
Suppose the gravel base depth is:
150 mm = 0.15 m
Volume:
32 × 0.15 = 4.8 m³
If the crushed stone density is around 1.7 tonnes/m³:
4.8 × 1.7 = 8.16 tonnes
This gives you a much more accurate order than simply guessing by truckloads.
Why Base Depth Matters
Many DIY projects fail because the base is too thin—not because the pavers are poor quality.
The physics is simple.
Every step, chair leg, barbecue, or vehicle creates pressure. A properly compacted crushed stone base spreads that pressure sideways before it reaches the soil below.
